period 2 meeting- March 16

At today's meeting we had a great discussion centered on two issues: Sharon's experiences creating video artifacts using iMovie, and issues concerning using technology with level 2 students.

Sharon’s experiences with iMovie
Tips:
  • It was a good idea to have two due dates: one for completing the footage, another for creating the editied video
  • It helps if some students have some background in program
  • Hard to help multiple students at the same time—but as students gain experience, they help each other (peer mentoring --Team effort--collaborative)
  • Time necessary-- plan on one hour of editing for one minute of video, but as students skills increase, it is easier to do the editing.
Project:
  • Research a news event in Chile or Mexico
  • Create a video newscast based on event which involves:
  • Reading the article in Spanish
  • Condensing, editing for video
  • Creating a dialogue based on the article
  • Editing and producing a movie
Speaking, listening, writing, reading + technology all in one project! My observation (I helped out in the production phase): students were really proud of their creations and used excellent higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.

Reflection on growth as learners to be completed.

Issue: Using technology with level two classes--insufficient supervision for lab environment leads to lost/broken equipment. Students have difficulty staying on task, focusing and behaving responsibly.

Possible Solutions
• More supervision (paras and parents)—Gail will come to classes
• Student teachers
• Contract signed to increase students’ awareness of their responsibilities
• Sign out system for all equipment (microphones, headsets, etc)
